Shaft 371 (Schacht 371) is one of the most famous and historical uranium mines in Europe. It is located near Hartenstein and Bad Schlema in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) of Saxony, Germany. The Deepest in Germany: With an excavation depth reaching more than 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) underground, it was the deepest mine in Germany until its operations ceased. Massive Production: Operated by the Soviet-German stock company SDAG Wismut, the mine was active from 1956 until 1990/1991. Over its lifespan, it employed up to 3,000 workers at a time and produced more than 73,000 tons of uranium, making the region pivotal to the Cold War arms race. [1] UNESCO World Heritage Site: Today, Shaft 371 is preserved as part of the Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Mining Region UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its iconic 50-meter-high steel headframe, machine houses, and administration buildings remain standing as historical landmarks.
